IS-2 vs Tiger II

One was built to dominate a long-range tank duel. The other was built to break an army’s way into cities. Judging both by the same test misses the point.

The Tiger II and IS-2 were the heaviest turreted tanks fielded in numbers by Germany and the Soviet Union. Both entered combat in 1944, both carried guns derived from artillery pieces, and both concentrated armour at the front. That is where the resemblance ends. Germany produced a nearly 69-tonne long-range tank killer; the Soviet Union produced a 46-tonne breakthrough tank whose 122 mm gun was expected to destroy fortifications as often as enemy armour.

In an open field, front to front, the Tiger II held the advantage. Its high-velocity 8.8 cm KwK 43, faster loading and thicker frontal armour made it the more dangerous duellist. But the war of 1944–45 was a retreat for Germany and an offensive for the Red Army. The IS-2 went farther, imposed less strain on bridges and recovery units, and appeared in almost eight times the numbers. The right verdict depends on whether the test is a duel or a campaign.

Armour angles are measured from the vertical, following the convention used in the vehicle records. The figures compare the late IS-2 model 1944 with the production-turret Tiger II; neither geometric “effective thickness” nor a single penetration table can reproduce the effects of plate quality, projectile type, range and impact angle.

The Tiger II’s 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 was the better dedicated anti-tank weapon: flatter trajectory, greater armour penetration and a one-piece round that a loader could handle faster than the IS-2’s separate projectile and propellant charge. The Soviet 122 mm D-25T could kill German heavy armour, but its slow loading cycle and supply of only ~28 rounds were serious disadvantages in a sustained tank fight. The Tiger II carried about 80.

Against a bunker, barricade or occupied building, the answer reverses. The IS-2 fired a roughly 25 kg high-explosive projectile, more than twice the mass of the German 88 mm HE shell. This was why the Red Army accepted two-piece ammunition: the tank was a breakthrough weapon, and a single 122 mm hit could collapse the position blocking an advance. In the urban battles of 1945, including Berlin, that destructive effect mattered more often than a perfectly flat anti-tank trajectory.

Head-on, the Tiger II was the harder target. Its 150 mm glacis and 180 mm turret front exceeded the late IS-2’s 100 mm glacis and 100–120 mm turret front. The IS-2 did carry slightly thicker hull sides — 90 mm against 80 mm — but neither tank could treat its flanks as safe. For the long-range defensive battle the Tiger II was designed to fight, its frontal protection was formidable.

Mobility and recoveryIosif Stalin IS-2

Their advertised road speeds were almost identical — roughly 37 and 38 km/h — but the similarity ends there. The IS-2 weighed about 23 tonnes less, had the better power-to-weight ratio and a road range near 240 km against roughly 170 km. That affected bridges, fuel, soft ground and recovery. A disabled 46-tonne tank was difficult; a disabled 69-tonne tank could become immovable when Germany lacked tractors, fuel and time.

Germany completed about 492 Tiger IIs. The Soviet Union built roughly 3,850 IS-2s — close to eight for every Tiger II. The German tank could dominate the ground visible from a defensive position, but it was too scarce to form more than local strongpoints. IS-2 regiments and brigades, integrated with infantry, engineers and self-propelled guns, became repeatable tools of the Red Army’s offensives from Poland to Berlin.

The verdict

If both tanks see each other at long range on open ground, the Tiger II is the favourite. Its gun is the better anti-tank weapon, its frontal armour is thicker, and its loader can sustain fire longer. Calling the IS-2 superior in that artificial duel would require ignoring the categories the German tank was specifically built to win.

But a campaign is not an artificial duel. The IS-2 was lighter, longer-ranged, more recoverable, devastating against fortifications and available in almost eight times the numbers. It travelled with an army that could fuel it, repair it and combine it with engineers, infantry and artillery. The Tiger II was the superior heavy tank killer. The IS-2 was the more useful instrument of victory — and in 1945 usefulness was the category that mattered.
