Every Allied tank crew in Normandy knew the arithmetic. One tank in four could kill a Tiger from the front. It was the one the Germans shot at first.
The Sherman Firefly exists because the British had a gun and no tank to put it in. The 17-pounder was too large for any turret in production, so about 2,100 Shermans were rebuilt around it: the radio moved into a bustle at the back of the turret, the gun mounted on its side to fit the recoil, the bow machine gunner deleted and his position turned into ammunition stowage. Nothing else changed — not one plate of armour.
That is the whole comparison. On the firing end the Firefly is the first Allied tank that can destroy a Tiger I frontally at ordinary battle ranges. On the receiving end it is exactly as vulnerable as the Sherman beside it, which the Tiger’s 8.8 cm could destroy well beyond the range at which either crew could reliably see the other.

One figure in that table deserves a warning label. Published penetration for the 17-pounder’s APDS round ranges from 185 to 231 mm at 1,000 yd depending on the source, and the round was notoriously inaccurate beyond short range — crews often preferred the APCBC, whose 118 mm was quite sufficient for the job. The 192 mm quoted here is the most commonly cited value, not a settled one.
The 17-pounder firing APCBC is credited with about 118 mm at 1,000 yd on plate at 30°. The Tiger’s frontal hull is 100 mm and vertical, offering no help from slope. The sum is not close: the Firefly kills a Tiger frontally at a kilometre, which no 75 mm Sherman could do at any range. The Tiger’s 8.8 cm KwK 36 managed about 100 mm at 1,000 m against a Firefly whose thickest frontal plate was 76 mm on the turret. Both tanks could destroy the other at any range at which they could see each other. That symmetry is the whole point — and it is a symmetry that had not existed on the Western Front before June 1944.
Nothing was done here, and nothing could be. The Firefly kept the Sherman’s 51 mm at 56° glacis on the M4A4 hulls that supplied most conversions — about 91 mm of line-of-sight thickness — with 76 mm on the turret front and 38 mm on the hull sides. The Tiger carried 100 mm on the hull front, 100 mm on the turret front behind a mantlet of 120 to 200 mm, and 80 mm on the upper hull sides — side plate as thick as most tanks’ fronts. A Tiger could be hurt from the flank by guns that could not touch it head-on; a Firefly could be destroyed from any facing by almost anything the Germans fielded.
The Firefly was issued at roughly one per troop of four, the other three keeping the 75 mm gun, and its long barrel with the muzzle brake made it identifiable at a distance. German gunners were told to engage it first, and did. British crews responded by painting the barrel in two tones — dark underneath, light along the top — so that at range it read as a short 75 mm gun. It is a small detail that says everything about the tactical position: the tank with the advantage in the duel had to disguise the advantage to survive long enough to use it.
About 1,347 Tigers were built across the entire war, against roughly 2,100 Firefly conversions in a single year, drawn from a Sherman production run of some 49,000. Any Allied armoured troop in North-West Europe could expect to have one Firefly in it; a German battalion with Tigers was a rarity that had to be moved deliberately to where it was needed, on a chassis that was mechanically demanding and weighed 57 tonnes — a weight that ruled out a great many bridges. The Firefly was not a better tank. It was a good enough gun, present everywhere, in a vehicle that could be recovered, repaired and replaced.
In a duel at a kilometre with both crews alert, the odds are close to even, and that is remarkable in itself: for two years there had been no Western Allied tank of which that could be said against a Tiger. The 17-pounder closed the gap in firepower completely and closed nothing else. The Firefly is the same tank underneath, with the same thin plate and the same fires.
What decided the encounters was therefore not the specification but who saw whom first, and from what angle — which is why the Firefly’s crews cared more about the two-tone barrel and the hull-down position than about the penetration table. The Tiger remains the better fighting vehicle on every column except the one that mattered most in 1944: there were fewer of them every month, and the tank that could kill them was in every troop.
