This is the one comparison where the answer is written into the machine itself: the Panther exists because of the T-34.
In the summer of 1941 German tank crews met something they could not kill. The T-34 had sloped armour their guns glanced off, wide tracks that crossed mud they sank in, and a gun that could kill anything they had. The shock was so complete that Germany did something it had never done: it copied the idea. The result, two years later, was the Panther.
So the honest question is not which tank was better on paper — the Panther, in most columns, and deliberately so. It is whether building a better answer was the right answer at all. Germany spent two years and a fortune producing roughly 6,000 Panthers. In the same war the Soviet Union built about 84,000 T-34s.

The Panther’s 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 was arguably the finest tank gun of the war for killing other tanks — a long, high-velocity weapon that out-penetrated even the Tiger’s famous 88 and could destroy a T-34 far beyond the range at which the Soviet 76.2 mm F-34 could answer. The T-34’s gun had been formidable in 1941 and was outclassed by 1943; the 85 mm of the T-34-85 closed much of the gap from 1944, but never the whole of it.
The Panther took the T-34’s own lesson and pushed it further: 80 mm at 55° on the glacis against the T-34’s 45 mm at 60° (about 90 mm effective). Frontally the Panther was very hard to kill. But it inherited a German weakness the T-34 shared and exploited: its sides were 40–50 mm, thin enough for almost anything, and Soviet doctrine was built around getting there.
Closer than the weights suggest — the power-to-weight ratios are almost identical, both around 15–16 hp per tonne. But the T-34 was faster (~53 against ~46 km/h), went further (~300 against ~250 km), and above all was 13 tonnes lighter. On the Eastern Front that meant bridges, mud and snow — the terrain that decided where a tank could actually be, which matters more than what it can do once it gets there.
The Panther’s final drives were a notorious weak point, and it was rushed into service before they were fixed: at Kursk, its combat debut, more Panthers fell out with breakdowns than were knocked out by the enemy. It matured into a formidable machine, but never a dependable one. The T-34 was the opposite — crude, roughly finished, hard on its crew, and able to keep going.
About 84,000 T-34s to roughly 6,000 Panthers: a ratio of about 14 to 1. This was not an accident of industrial capacity alone — it was designed in. The T-34 was conceived to be built by unskilled labour in relocated factories with poor tooling, and every crudity it is criticised for bought that. The Panther was conceived to win a duel.
The Panther was the better tank, and the T-34 is the reason it existed. That sentence contains the whole argument. German designers did not stumble on sloped armour and wide tracks in 1942 — they were shown them, at gunpoint, in 1941, and the Panther is the reply they wrote.
But the reply came two years late, cost too much, broke its final drives, and arrived in numbers that could not matter. The T-34 was never the better tank; it was the better answer to the war being fought — a design whose real genius was that a country losing its factories could still build it, in tens of thousands, and keep building it. The Panther won the argument on paper. The T-34 had already won it on the drawing board.
