The Churchill Mk VII carried more frontal armour than a Tiger. It is the only Western tank of which that is true, and it changed almost nothing.
Set the two side by side and one column jumps out. The Churchill Mk VII presented a hull front built up from three plates — 140 mm angled at the bottom, 57 mm nearly horizontal, then 152 mm vertical — and a turret front of 152 mm. The Tiger I carried 100 mm, flat and vertical, on both. On thickness of plate the British infantry tank is the better-protected vehicle.
Then read the next column. The Churchill’s 6-pounder managed about 80 mm of penetration at a thousand yards, and the 75 mm that replaced it on later marks managed 63 mm — less than the gun it replaced, because it was fitted for its high-explosive shell rather than its armour-piercing performance. Neither could defeat 100 mm of Tiger frontally. The Tiger’s 8.8 cm could not defeat a Mk VII’s front either, and could defeat everything else about it.

The two armour columns are not measuring the same tank across time. The 102 mm figure is the Churchill of 1941–43, which is what met Tigers in Tunisia; the 152 mm Mk VII reached units in 1944. The rear plate is the row worth noting: 51 mm on every mark, unchanged from first to last, against 80 mm on the Tiger.
On the Mk VII the Churchill is the better-armoured vehicle frontally, and by a wide margin: 152 mm vertical on hull and turret against the Tiger’s 100 mm. Even the earlier marks carried 102 mm, more than the German heavy tank, at a time when the standard British cruiser tank carried half that. Where the comparison turns is at the back: the Churchill’s hull rear stayed 51 mm through every mark of the war, while the Tiger carried 80 mm there. The Churchill was built to lead infantry forwards into fire from ahead, and its armour distribution says so plainly.
This is where the design fails on its own terms. The 6-pounder’s 80 mm at 1,000 yd was a respectable anti-tank figure in 1942 and could not defeat a Tiger’s frontal plate. The 75 mm that replaced it on later marks was worse against armour — about 63 mm — and was fitted precisely because the infantry the tank existed to support needed high explosive more than they needed armour penetration. That was probably the right choice for the job. It also means that the best-protected Western tank of the war carried, from 1943 onwards, a gun that could not exploit its own survivability against the enemy’s heavy armour.
The Churchill’s long track run and low gearing gave it obstacle and slope performance no other tank of the period matched. At Steamroller Farm in Tunisia on 28 February 1943, Churchills of A Squadron, 51st RTR climbed a slope the defenders had judged impassable to armour and came down behind them; German accounts of the action assumed they were facing something other than tanks. At 24 km/h on a road the Churchill was slower than almost anything on the battlefield, and in the hills of Tunisia and Italy that mattered far less than being able to go where the map said no tank could.
Roughly 5,640 Churchills were built against 1,347 Tigers, and the more important figure is what they became. The hull carried the Crocodile flamethrower with its armoured fuel trailer, the AVRE with its Petard demolition mortar, bridgelayers, fascine carriers and mine-clearing variants — the backbone of the specialised armour used on the Normandy beaches. The Tiger was a gun tank and remained one. Judged as a fighting vehicle the Tiger is plainly superior; judged as a chassis, the Churchill did more different jobs than any other Allied tank of the war.
A Churchill Mk VII meeting a Tiger I frontally at a kilometre is one of the few Western matchups where neither tank can kill the other quickly, and it is a stalemate the Churchill has no way to break. Its gun could not defeat the German frontal plate at any sensible range, and its speed gave it no way to work round to a flank. The Tiger, unable to penetrate the Mk VII’s front, needed only to wait for a side, a rear or a track — and at 24 km/h the Churchill was slow to deny it any of the three.
Which is why the comparison is the wrong way to judge the tank. The Churchill was not built to fight Tigers; it was built to walk in front of infantry, absorb the fire meant for them, and get onto ground other tanks could not reach. On that specification it was the most successful British tank of the war, and it is the only one whose hull was still doing useful work — as a Crocodile, as an AVRE — on the last day of the fighting.
