A Fortress Gun on Tracks

The SU-152 was conceived first as a mobile answer to fortifications, not as a specialist tank destroyer. In October 1942 the Soviet State Defence Committee demanded a family of self-propelled guns able to accompany armour and infantry through prepared positions. For the heavy member, the requirement centred on the 152.4 mm ML-20 gun-howitzer: a corps-artillery weapon powerful enough to break bunkers, earthworks and masonry with direct fire.

Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant, or ChKZ, placed the weapon on the available KV-1S heavy-tank chassis. The turret disappeared and the driver, gun and five-man crew shared a welded, fully enclosed casemate at the front; the engine and transmission remained behind them. This origin matters. The SU-152 later became famous for fighting Tigers, but the design brief was to carry heavy artillery through shellfire and bring it close enough to breach a defended line.

Twenty-Five Days to the KV-14

The programme moved at wartime speed. A State Defence Committee decree of 4 January 1943 ordered a prototype on the KV-1S chassis. ChKZ's SKB-2 design team, led by Joseph Kotin with Lev Troyanov as leading designer, completed the selected layout as Object 236, then called KV-14. Its hull was assembled in January and the ML-20S installation arrived on 23 January; final assembly finished the following day.

Trials were severe despite their compressed schedule. In temperatures down to −42 °C, the prototype travelled to the proving ground and back and fired 234 rounds, including 100 with increased charges. Its measured average rate of fire was 2.8 rounds per minute. The commission accepted the concept, and on 14 February 1943 the KV-14 entered Red Army service as the SU-152. What emerged was not an improvised field conversion but a production vehicle created with extraordinary urgency.

The ML-20S Inside the Casemate

The adapted ML-20S retained the field gun's muzzle brake and combined direct- and indirect-fire roles. Its mounting allowed only about 7° of traverse to either side and elevation from roughly −3° to +18°; wider corrections required the driver to turn the entire vehicle. Twenty separately loaded rounds were carried. The standard OF-540 high-explosive projectile weighed 43.56 kg and left the barrel at about 655 m/s, while the later BR-540 armour-piercing projectile weighed 48.78 kg at about 600 m/s.

Handling a shell and a separate propellant charge inside the casemate limited a trained crew to roughly 2–3 rounds per minute. The fighting compartment also contained fuel, visibility had important blind spots, and early vehicles accumulated propellant fumes; twin roof ventilators were introduced from late September 1943. Protection was substantial rather than invulnerable: approximately 75 mm on the upper casemate front and 60 mm on the hull front and sides. At about 45.5 tonnes, the 600 hp V-2K diesel gave a nominal road speed around 43 km/h and a range near 200 km.

Kursk and the Birth of the Beast-Killer

The SU-152 made its combat debut on the northern face of the Kursk salient in July 1943. The 1541st Heavy Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment, commanded by Guards Major Aleksei F. Sankovskiy, was held in the Central Front reserve before joining the fighting around the German Ninth Army's attack sector. Under the April establishment, a heavy regiment fielded twelve SU-152s in six two-gun batteries, plus a KV-1S command tank and a BA-64 armoured car.

The regiment's report for 8–18 July claimed seven Tigers, 39 medium tanks and eleven self-propelled guns destroyed. Those are Soviet unit claims, not confirmed German losses. Later accounts repeatedly converted the eleven self-propelled guns into Ferdinands and inflated the result into a tidy legend, although no Ferdinands fought in Sankovskiy's immediate sector. The defensible conclusion is more interesting than the myth: a vehicle built to break fortifications had shown that its enormous shell could also disable the heaviest German armour.

What a 152 mm Hit Could Do

At Kursk the SU-152 did not yet have its purpose-designed BR-540 armour-piercing ammunition, which reached units later in 1943. Crews instead fired the 43.56 kg OF-540 high-explosive shell, carrying up to about 6.25 kg of explosive, and concrete-piercing ammunition at tanks. A direct hit did not have to perforate a heavy tank's armour to disable it: the impact and blast could damage tracks, suspension, optics and turret mechanisms, while fragments spalled from the armour's inner face could injure the crew. This was a disabling effect, not conventional armour penetration—and it depended on scoring a direct hit.

That capability produced the name Zveroboy, usually rendered as “beast-killer”, after the German Tiger, Panther and Ferdinand menagerie. The later BR-540 AP shell offered conventional penetration: Soviet tables give 125 mm at 500 m, 115 mm at 1,000 m and 90 mm at 2,000 m against a vertical plate under the Soviet 75% criterion. Yet the SU-152 remained a slow-firing assault gun, not a purpose-built duellist. Its best anti-armour method was an ambush, where the first immense HE impact could decide the engagement before its narrow traverse and long reload became liabilities.

From the Dnieper to East Prussia

After Kursk, SU-152 regiments supported the Red Army's advance through Ukraine and across the Dnieper. The type fought in the Crimea, including the liberation of Simferopol on 13 April 1944, and surviving vehicles served from Karelia to Poland. Its original function remained essential: heavy high-explosive fire against fieldworks, stone buildings and defended villages, delivered either directly or from covered positions using the panoramic sight.

Attrition and replacement steadily reduced its numbers. Most heavy regiments converted to newer machines during 1944, yet photographs and unit records show SU-152s still operating in mixed formations and in East Prussia in early 1945. The 394th Guards Heavy Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment, for example, employed five SU-152s in February 1945 to breach buildings and walls for infantry during urban fighting. The vehicle's late survival explains why wartime photographs span far beyond its single year in production.

The SU-152 Is Not the ISU-152

Production ended because the underlying KV-1S family was leaving the assembly lines. ChKZ completed the changeover to the ISU-152, which mounted the same ML-20S in a differently shaped casemate on the newer IS heavy-tank chassis, with stronger frontal protection and improved mechanical components. The last regular SU-152s were completed in November 1943, but four were delivered in December and two more accepted in January 1944, bringing the documented total to 670.

The distinction is central to the vehicle's history. It was the SU-152 on the KV-1S chassis—not the later ISU-152—that fought at Kursk and earned the original Zveroboy reputation. Its brief production run nevertheless created the Red Army's successful heavy self-propelled artillery pattern: a protected 152 mm weapon able to smash a strongpoint, support an assault or stop a counterattack. The ISU-152 carried that formula to Berlin, but the SU-152 proved it first.
